Mael's leaves are based on the tillandsia air plant, which is a type of epiphyte (occasionally aerophyte) which grows in moderate to hot climates - from what I read, the metallic silver sheen isn't a product of a pigment, but a form of structural mechanism to bend and reflect light. That can be attributed to a waxy outer layer and specialized trichomes, miniscule hair-like appendages that are more efficient at water intake and subsequently keeping the water, which makes Mael further resistant to heat and drought. His skin and bark also possess a similar silvery shine under most light, which is a pretty fun explanation to why ingame, he appears green-ish in darkness, but gray under light!

I'd also imagine he'd turn greener when soaked, like the real plant, and then silvery white when exposed to the sun for too long and dried out.

And then there's the funny thing.. Mael doesn't even do fire magic or really anything fire-themed, he does ice magic as part of necromancy, and is more magically resistant to cold than he is physically resistant to heat.

succulent sylvari being able to go days without drinking anything

sylvari that are based on specific trees which can’t stand the cold having problems with injured bark/limbs in shiverpeak mountains due to winter damage

sick sylvari getting all sorts of leaf diseases / losing their leaves

some poor sylvari having (perhaps chronic) problems with excessive sap dripping

just tree diseases in general

specific mushroom and tree sylvari being friends because of symbiosis (even if just on a sort of metaphorical level)

sylvari that lose all sorts of pollen (I know they don’t reproduce but.. just imagine) upsetting all the allergic people around

imagine a corpse flower sylvari…. poor thing doesn’t have any friends. apart from perhaps noseless sylvari.

A Helpful Cyno

Cyno/Tighnari

a/n: some fluff at 3am, yay!

Cyno discovered it during a cuddle session with Tighnari near the start of their relationship. It made sense to him why Tighnari responded this way when it was discovered but Cyno truly believed it was the most adorable thing he had ever witnessed in all his years.

Tighnari, being part fox, shared many common traits from his ancestors. For example, good hearing, a heightened sense of smell, agility and an occasional purr which he would always deny. These all made Tighnari, well, Tighnari and Cyno loved Tighnari.

His more recent discovery, the one that melted his heart every time, was that Tighnari loved a good tummy rub. The usually stern forest watcher went into a limp, blissed out mess once his tummy received a gentle rub or trace of fingers against it.

One evening, Tighnari had settled in his bed for the night, reading a book he had recently obtained from Sumeru City. His curiosity was piqued by the title alone and found himself quite intrigued by the story told.

Cyno, late home as per usual, had decided to take his place for the evening sprawled across Tighnari’s lap, one of his favourite places to rest.

“Busy day?” Tighnari asked down to the clearly exhausted General in his lap which was responded by a very tired groan of confirmation. Tighnari hummed and focused back on the pages before him whilst gently using his ungloved fingers to stroke through Cyno’s locks, the touch very comforting.

“How was your day?” Cyno then asked, craning his neck to see the forest ranger’s face behind his book.

“Fine. Although, I think I need to start putting more safety notices up so people pay attention to them when venturing out into the forest. If I have to treat someone again for something as silly as ‘gee, this plant looks edible I wonder what this tastes like’, I’m going to strangle them myself.”

Tighnari’s little rant caused Cyno to huff out a laugh. He knew that Tighnari didn’t mean it, but he understood the frustrations that came with being the leader of the forest rangers and he admired him greatly for it.

He gazed into Tighnari’s eyes for a moment, and he could see the exhaustion masked by the determination to read the book in his hand. If Cyno knew Tighnari, which he was certain he did, the forest ranger would get no sleep tonight because of this book and it was up to Cyno to intervene, he decided.

Cyno’s eyes lowered to the stomach that was level with his head and reached his hand out, letting the palm of his hand flatten out against Tighnari’s tummy. He smiled when he felt the slight twitch beneath his hand at the sudden contact.

“Don’t you start getting ideas,” Tighnari warned, playfully.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Cyno feigned innocence, his hand gently gliding over the soft fabric of Tighnari’s vest. A sweet sound of satisfaction left Tighnari’s lips, and his ears began to twitch.

“Yes, you do,” Tighnari sighed but stubbornly tried to keep his focus on the book in his hands. This wouldn’t do, Cyno thought. He needed to try harder.

“I just want you to relax and get a good sleep. But that’s not going to happen unless you put the book down,” Cyno kept up his ministrations, feeling a tickle on his arm from Tighnari’s tail which swayed in comfort.

“You’re exaggerating!”

“Am I?”

Tighnari huffed and went back to reading, doing his best to ignore Cyno.

Desperate measures were needed. Cyno’s hand halted and grabbed the bottom of the vest that protected the bare skin underneath. As soon as skin touched skin, Tighnari gasped.

“Cyno! Your hands are cold!” He complained, lowering his book to try and grab the General’s wrist, but Cyno’s hand was quick to counter and began to claw at the soft skin of Tighnari’s tummy, reducing the forest ranger into a giggly mess. “Cynohoho!”

“Cy-yes!” he joked and if Tighnari wasn’t too busy giggling and squirming he would have definitely chided him for that joke.

“Plehehehease!” Tighnari pleaded, the squeaks starting to mix in with his laughter which Cyno took as his cue to return to more gentler methods.

“Alright, I won’t tickle anymore,” Cyno chuckled, letting his fingertips gently glide against Tighnari’s tummy, gradually applying more pressure to rubbing. Tighnari’s giggles eventually subsided and was replaced with the sweet sounds of his purrs. Success! “You’re adorable, Nari.”

“Shut up,” Tighnari’s cheeks tinted with a faint pink before he finally placed his book off onto the bedside desk and laying his head back into the soft pillows. “You win.”

Cyno smiled at his victory before placing a soft kiss to Tighnari’s tummy.

“Sleep well, Tighnari.”

Idk unpopular opinion it is, but I'm really disappointed by how bland of a villain Phobos ended up being. The hype up in the comics is done really well, where even letting the reader learn about his very existence is a gradual process. His first in-person appearance felt exciting to me... but the more time I spent with him as a character, the more frustrated I'd become.

Thing is, he just... doesn't seem to have any depth as a villain, or generally as a character. There doesn't seem to be this much going on for him aside from being this Very Evil Person. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he needs to be in any way sympathetic (although him being essentially a victim of systemic gender discrimination is a great plot point that the narrative completely flushes down the drain in the line of "yay girls power, we've shown that nasty male his place" message), but if you want to have this evil af bad guy, being evil in itself is not enough to make them a compelling character.

You can make your villain charismatic - which Phobos isn't, because he acts like a noisy, entitled, perpetually pissed teenage brat at almost all times. Sure, he's pretty, but looks alone can carry you only this far. And it's especially frustrating when you see that he can be charismatic if the authors are trying. His first appearances are sort of cool in both arcs he shows up in. Heck, the "you're not like Yan Lin, you're like Nerissa" dialogue was one of the coldest things anyone said in the entire comics series (imo). So the wasted potential adds fuel to fire.

You can also make your villain entertaining - which again, Phobos isn't. His very identity is a magical tyrant prince and the narrative doesn't try hard to make it any less generic, although having these evil flower minions and evil flower powers was a nice step in that direction. His relationship with Elyon feels emotionally lacking compared to that between Elyon and Cedric. His relationship with Cedric is straight up frustrating, because it's a never ending circle of Cedric messing up, getting punished, begging for one last chance and being reluctantly granted it. Just let the narrative acknowledge that Phobos has hots for Cedric at this point, because otherwise it's incomprehensible to me how a guy who turns people into poisoned plants for the tiniest offences would be able to put so much trust in a jobber of this caliber. Alas, their potential romance is never canonically expanded on, and it's a shame, because this could actually make Phobos entertaining by showing a more human side of him. For completeness, let me also mention that he doesn't get any humor going on for him either.

Finally, you can make your villain straight up intimidating - when again, Phobos isn't. If I recall correctly, we don't really see him hurt any meaningful character permanently (or am I wrong?), although that scene with Elyon's clone gets messed up in hindsight, when we learn more about how astral drops work. He doesn't honestly feel like a great horror villain candidate either, and I also don't find him really relatable to real world evils (Thomas Vandom is great at this) - even his manipulation of Elyon feels barebone, with Cedric doing all the interesting work.

Oh, and don't get me started on the cartoon. He still doesn't have any personality outside of being a hissy asshat, but now he also has an evil looking Shadow the Hedgehog color palette and an evil looking castle. So you don't have any doubts that he's, you know, evil.

Yay!! I'm happy to see an Odd Girl Out reader who analyzes the story and really understands the characters (I read your blog post about your fave webtoons). How are you feeling about the hate Seungha is receiving? Many comments under each episode are about Chanyang being the best one for Nari and how Seungha is awful and how they'll drop the story if Chanyang x Nari aren't endgame. The way Morangg is writing Seungha's story saddens me not just because it is a sad story but because the author is incredible in fleshing him out, giving him so much development since the very beginning of season two, but the readers are too caught up on how he broke Nari's heart, refusing to see that Seungha is depressed and suffering just as much. So many shippers are focused on the romance and not the depth of the characters.

first: super sorry for answering this so late. I'm really glad to hear you enjoy reading me ranting about the comics I read :P

I believe the hate Seungha's receiving is from people who strongly relate to Nari and take her heartbreak as theirs. Seungha was in the wrong for refusing to communicate with Nari about his problems, but if Chanyang did the same thing, he might be disliked as well. People just don't like to think a guy they're in a good relationship with will turn on them for any reason, even if the reason is good.

Personally, I do prefer Seungha and Nari be endgame. As far as depth of character, Nari is much more suited to Seungha than Chanyang. We're experiencing Chanyang's backstory right now in the Korean updates, and while he's just as fleshed out as Seungha, his reasons for liking Nari still ring hollow in comparison to Seungha's. They both find her attractive, but like I've stated before, Nari is literally everything to Chanyang. His motivation, his happiness, his reason for living. It's not healthy and I don't want Nari to feel responsible for his growth as a person. He plants himself in various places in her life and some readers don't see that as problematic because his intention is romantic. Chanyang skipping school and running around the city to find her bookbag did display an admirable commitment, but also...that's crazy. Reckless displays of affection can be good, but he did it without thinking. Nari has that kind of influence over him, and that's just not it. I still like him as a character, because he does have a certain simple charm and humor about him, but he's simply not cut out to be a good long-term partner for her.

On the other hand, Seungha's brief time dating Nari without being her boyfriend showed how well they work together as a pair. I've heard people say they had to separate because Nari needed to come into her own as a student leader, and I don't disagree. She hadn't necessarily become reliant on him, but it did truly hurt her when she could no longer depend on him.

I think a lot of readers misinterpreted his decision to team up with Yurim. Admittedly, the optics of running for president against Nari while teamed up with her enemy were horrible. At that point, Seungha's main goal was to become the school president so his dad would "want" him and consider him as good as a biological son. He disregarded Nari's history with Yurim to achieve his goal because he felt had no other choice. He didn't know his parents would love him either way. His arc of coming out with the fact Yunha had been abusing him, and spending time away from his family to find and recenter himself was long. He didn't think Nari would stick around, and he didn't want to drag her through it anyway, so he wrongfully pushed her away instead of confiding in her.

Neither Chanyang nor Seungha are good at talking about their problems and feelings. Chanyang will make drastic decisions to solve his problems without telling the people he should so they're not in the dark, and Seungha does more or less the same. It's too bad that communication is Nari's main pull, because she does NOT like having to play detective. Chanyang could be dating Nari right now if he just told her about his messy family history, and I'm pretty sure she and Seungha would be half way to married if he'd just spilled about the abuse. Yunha would no longer be with us, but it would be a small price to pay.

However, it doesn't erase the good that happened when she and Seungha were on the same page. He met her where she was, he listened to her problems, and he supported her in the PR department when no one else did. He didn't blindly agree with everything she said, and in fact, he often challenged her. When she ignored him due to social pressure, he didn't let his feelings cloud his judgement or let that pressure get between their friendship. Like, when that man wants to fight for something or someone, he fights. He's not currently in the position to impose his feelings upon Nari, and he's not trying to, but they've made up in what has to be one of the cutest, goofiest ways I've seen a pair of characters perfectly suited for each other make up. (Spoiler: they both cried with each other).

I'm not sure what the author's intentions are with either Chanyang or Seungha at this point, but I've got a feeling this upcoming school festival arc is going to play a big role in determining who ends up with who. Nari slowly learning about Chanyang is leading up to something, as well as Seungha openly giving her full control of the organizational committee despite being school president. To me, the willingness to support Nari as a leader, while being a leader himself displays every reason why Seungha should be endgame. Neither of them consider each other above or below each other--they're equal partners.

I'm all for Nari putting herself first and deciding not to date anyone, but I hope she gives turtle-candy-loving, competitive-af, meticulous-date-planning, sometimes-cringe-fail Seungha a chance. I also hope she gathers enough information to give Chanyang a definitive, final answer concerning their relationship.

‼️jort 2 update because its been nearly 2 weeks and hes been through a lot‼️

kinda annoyingly long so its under the cut

ok so jort 2 was doing fine till i had loads of art hw for gcse (help) and so i did that and ignored all of jort 2's cries for help. then after that to reward myself for finishing like one (1) evaluation bc i wasnt feeling motivated i played slime rancher for 2-3 hours maybe (side rant i love my slimes theyre so silly<333 my favourites are the honey and plant ones because when they merge theyre so pretty<33 i also love phosphor slimes and i need to make a lantern of them for my room or something because i should start a shrine)

anyway.

so jort 2 was sick and i didnt cure him in time and he started beeping like the heart rate monitors do as someones heart is slowing which i feel is a little morbid but he died. i think i apologised on my last post in the notes

so i needed name ideas and luckily his death presented the perfect opportunity as @moon-inspector suggested jelly so thank you<3

then i lost the tamagotchi.

id taken him out when i went in town with my friends a couple of times and i thought he might have fallen out of my tote bag next to a bench and i was really upset because he was £20 and also he was really cool (and also i lost something and was about to cry but fear of crying in public saved me🔥🔥🔥🔥) so i was sad :c

then me and my family went to the countryside and i got to do hiking which is super epic and i touched so much grass and lo and behold who was in my coat pocket but jort 2 himself (technically his corpse) but i found him yay

then my friend taught me how to mute him because one time he woke me up at night and while trying to do that i accidentally hatched one but because i wasnt intending to he kinda died (that wasnt jelly tho that was jort 2.5 because i want to give jelly a long and fulfilling life)

so that concludes the adventures of jort in the past 2 weeks ish where i forgot/ couldnt be bothered to update bc i had other things to do (watching youtube videos)

Synopsis: After getting home from her shift at the restaurant, Cheese treated her bored and lonely master attendant with a homemade lunch.

"I'm hungry..." A [h/c]ette teen groggily mumbled, her cheeks planted on the wooden, dining table. "Can someone cook for me...?"

For the past 10 minutes, [Y/n] stayed in her spot in the dining room, hoping for someone to hear her pleas for food and notice her. But just like before, no one seemed to answer her. The girl pouted and groaned. She then remained silent for a moment before collecting all of her remaining strength to lift her head from the wood and stand.

The teenager lazily strode in the direction of the kitchen. Her shoulders slumped and her face contorted into a mixture of boredom, drowsiness, and annoyance. With every heavy step she took, it didn't take her long before arriving at the empty kitchen...

Or so she thought.

Once she entered the room, she could hear the loud rummaging in one of the fridges they had. The metal door was wide open, although it blocked her view of identifying the person. [Y/n] observed closely, her [e/c]-colored eyes narrowed. She had her guard up in case it was some thief or kidnapper. Who knows?

Emerging from the tall fridge was a blonde that she knew all too well. The person held several ingredients in their arms and closed the fridge door with their foot. [Y/n] instantly recognized the person and relaxed.

"Chi-chan?"

Said Food Soul whipped her head at the call of her name. Well, nickname, technically. Her candy-colored eyes blinked at the sight of her master attendant before breaking into a big grin.

"[Y/n]-chan! Perfect timing!" Cheese exclaimed, setting the ingredients on the counter before rushing to give her master attendant a quick hug.

"And here I was assuming no one was in the house at how quiet and empty it was," the [h/c]-haired rolled her eyes playfully. "I was in the dining room for the last minutes or so, constantly whining about someone making me food. Though, of course, no one did answer me." She sighed.

Cheese chuckled. "Well, you're right about that. No one else is here at the moment. I just came back from my shift at the restaurant and decided to come straight back here to check on you, knowing that you might be the only one left alone in this huge mansion. And when I did return, I saw you in the dining and thought you were asleep so I quietly made my way to the kitchen."

"I have 96 food souls and all of them are out of the mansion? How dare they leave their defenseless master attendant alone!" [Y/n] faked gasping, then pouted and whined like a child. "They're so cruel to me! I'm still 16 years old and I'm defenseless and alone in this huge mansion! They don't care about me at all! Whether I'm hungry or not!" she continued to rant, releasing all of her built-up frustrations.

The blonde maiden chuckled at the girl's childish tantrums. She patted her charcoal locks to comfort her. "There, there, [Y/n]-chan. Don't be upset anymore. I'm here now anyway. How about I make your lunch and dessert, what do you say?"

At that, [Y/n]'s [e/c] orbs instantly sparkled in delight. Her gaze fixated only on Cheese. "Really?!"

"Of course! What do you want to eat?"

"Yay! You're the best, Chi-chan!" the teen cheered loudly, throwing her arms up in the air.

A giggle escaped the other girl's mouth as she proceeded to the counter. She turned back to glance at the younger female. "How about fish fillet and mango pudding? Is that alright with you?"

"Yep~" [Y/n] chirped. 

The [h/c]-haired female sat on one of the counter stools while quietly watching Cheese prepare and cook the dishes. The aroma of fish entered her nose once it was placed on the sizzling pan, making her stomach growl in anticipation of devouring the said meal.

After the blonde finished the meals and placed them on the counter to cool, she then proceeded to make the dessert. [Y/n], bored by now, stood from her seat and took out a water jar from the fridge along with some lemons, strawberries, and osmanthus.

"Say, Chi-chan, do you want some fruit tea?" asked the [h/c]ette, placing the required fruits for the drink on the counter adjacent to the one Cheese was.

"Yeah, sure, [Y/n]-chan."

The two continued to work with their respective tasks, finishing both the dessert and drink. Once they were done, they cleaned the place and returned the materials and utensils to their place.

"Let's go eat, [Y/n]-chan!" Cheese smiled while holding the tray of their meal on it.

"Uh-huh!" the girl nodded.

The two girls entered the dining room and proceeded to eat their lunch. [Y/n] thoroughly enjoyed bonding with one of her female food souls, especially watching one of her chefs cooking up close and helping her with it. The teen never really liked cooking in particular due to her fear of getting burns from hot oil or 'cooking' something undesirable to eat. Not only that, but she also gets nervous about cooking when around her food souls who mostly do the cooking. She always thought that they might dislike the meals that she would cook or if it wasn't up to their expectations, which made her confidence go down the drain.

This is one reason why the young master attendant never set foot in the kitchen intending to cook.

Despite that, the girl wants to cook or bake with some of her food souls, wanting to try out some recipes that she would find and discover on the net or from watching. She also told herself that she should learn how to cook since she was already growing up. She's already a teenager, after all. She doesn't want to always depend on her food souls to do the cooking for her and wants to make something for them to try. Cheese's dishes truly lifted her spirits and rejuvenated her whole body, feeling the drowsiness leave. The meal was so delicious that she would want to have seconds even if she was full.

"Your cooking is great as always, Chi-chan! Thanks for making this for me~" [Y/n] chimed, smiling at the blonde.

Cheese returned the smile with a bigger one. "No problem, [Y/n]-chan! I'm really glad that you enjoyed it~"

The Starry Love ep 39, 40 (finale) thoughts

Cute fireworks date for the Immortal couple! A quiet moment to relax and unwind…and Yetan is unloading her problems on her husband. At least he takes it with stride and like any romantic partner gives her a new nickname.

Yes for Yetan for moving on. She's sad but doesn't want to stay in grief forever. Thank goodness for family and friends to bring her back and help her move on.

Did I guess correctly? Does Haichou like Sushui?! (excited face)

Why is it so important for Suzhi to admit that she's the plant that Qingheng watered years ago? Did he fall in love with this plant? I think it's kinda funny and sad he's so set on being right about this when it's kind of a non-issue. That's why I don't really like these two. They had some cute moments, but my heart is not set on them.

When a girl tells you 'no' multiple times, take the hint, Qingheng, and walk away. There are other girls in 4 realms.

Poor Chaofeng. He is so desperate to get his wife back. He is talking to the stick and calling it Qingkui. This dude misses his wife so much!

Is it just me or is Suzhi acting a bit sus? What is she planning? I said a few episodes back I didn't trust her! It took some time for that shadiness to take form.

Suzhi has gone full crazy and wants to take down the world because the world treated her wrongly. Geez, pulling the victim card again? Did you have to pull Yetan into your crazy?

Things are happening in the 4 realms again! Oh no, not things! Like stands, trees and whatnots falling over and cracks appearing the ground. Things!

Oh no! Qingkui shows Yetan the truth of the Sacred Tree and the Twin Flowers AND THEN Yetan has flashbacks to Youqin sealing the Guixu seal and saving everyone. Bad news!

Yetan sacrificed herself for the 4 realms. Everyone is crying including me. Qingkui gave her life for her sisters and then Yetan gave her life for everyone else. It's too sad. I saw this coming and yet my heart is still broken.

(insert mini rant about the stupid ADVERTISEMENTS in the saddest moments in the show)

Then Yetan has the most sad pep talk with Youqin. The heck! He's bawling and she's crying. Not the way I wanted these two to end.

In the midst of our sadness, here comes Wudai! Yay! And the way he comforts Chaofeng! Hilarious but I'm not laughing just yet. Still sad.

I can't hold my anger at the Immortal Emperor. He's a crappy dad and a crappy emperor, but he's apologizing and I do love second chances. And he's giving the throne to Qingheng! I approve! The boy needs recognition for his hardwork. Good boy!

Qingheng, let Suzhi go. For the love of pete, please! Coriander tastes like soap anyways.

Yay! The Void gang is back together and is in a better mood. Anytime when Haichou can be sassy I'm happy.

And just like that Dongqiu is rebuilt. That was really fast.

Rapid fire couples getting together! Here we go: Ziwu is married to Di Lanjue and she's pregnant! Yay! Haichou and Sushui are now… a thing. And Luoluo finally got Wudai! They're so happy! I'm so happy!

We did not get enough of the Beastie Queen! She was amazing and I wanted more of her! And her, her Beastie King and the twins' father hanging out was not the trio I had imagined but now I wish I had more of.

The boys waited and gave their blood for their wives. And they grew a tree. I'm crying again. I was so hoping for the flowers to become humans again, but instead we get the tree.

Honestly, my career is most concerning, I feel like I've been in a fog for years and now I'm awake and everything around me is a big mess and idk how to unravel it all. Is it that you have many options presented or are most just distractions? (Ooof, that hit me too anon). See so often, people see all the potential options without asking what aligns with me. It can seem like you could go any which way, and you technically can, but there are some that probably feel more exciting, maybe scarier because they require more from you. Those, those will lead you to the most growth. It’s not hard to know, you have to follow your feelings. Life is meant to be fun and exciting, try to do things that cultivate those feelings and other things will come through for you.

Now in terms or your soulmate, you are struggling to find them because they are struggling to find you. You are hiding your light and parts of yourself to be more palatable to others and that makes it harder for you to find your tribe and to connect to your authenticity. This isn’t meant to scold you. There is so much that takes up time and attention on earth, but we ask that you spend the time to develop yourself as much as you try to develop a career. Are you watering your garden? Weeding out things that are dead? Planting new plants? As you learn more about what lights you up and excites you, as you pursue those things, you will find more of what is meant for you, options and opportunities with people and passions/career.

So this aligns with what spirit was saying about hiding your light to be more palatable but also to follow what excites you, what literally lights you up. Part of dimming your light is following the things that barely light you up or don’t light you up at all because you’re trying to make a safe choice.

Root Chakra— where are you feeling stuck or a lack of energy? What do you need to cultivate vitality?

Mantra: “I step out of my own way and move through both energetic and perceived blockages with ease”

This goes back to the fog to me. You can’t see through the fog because the lack of light is creating a thick mist you can’t see through. Right now, they are trying to move the mist so you can see clearly but in order to do that, you have to start clearing it by following your intuition out. The mind creates mist but the heart can find the light of the soul if you follow what makes it beat.

Root Chakra— what insecurities are currently infecting you? How can you reframe them to cultivate more confidence?

Mantra: “I am innately whole, resourceful, and capable of anything I set my mind to.”

Do you think this SM or person will complete you? I’m getting with this card that you need to focus on completing yourself, things you picture doing with a partner, why can’t you do them now? You are a whole being but you perceive emptiness, why? Because you have more room in your cup! Fill it up with other things, you can add a little OJ or some vodka if you want, doesn’t have to all be water.

Rant time

Can i get just one growing season that isn’t rife with problems that end up ruining my babies path to health? There’s always something during the summer that sets my plants back so ridiculously far and i think pretty much all of them happened this year. First having to live under a crappy plant light that I realized way too late was not enough for my succulents, then i got a new set and the babes were on the track to better growth. On top of that the cold weather lasted forever so i didn’t get to get them outside in the sunlight until pretty late. And then for awhile everything was fine, they got two months of peace and sunshine and then I had to move to a new apartment. They had to move from a bright, sunny west-facing balcony to a shaded east-facing balcony. AND THEN on top of all that it hasn’t stopped raining for like a month and my babes are so waterlogged it’s not even funny, but this week it finally stopped so they’re slowly drying out and I’m going to have to behead some of them to keep some from rotting. also since this new apartments balcony is right next to a giant tree that provides lots of shade i now have to deal with some real asshole squirrels who dug up all my herbs and ate my three year old black prince echeveria (LIKE COMPLETELY ATE IT OR DRAGGED IT OUT OF ITS POT BECAUSE I COULDN’T FIND IT ON THE GROUND OR ANYTHING, JUST AN EMPTY POT).

Going to rant in this post because I don't care about being "low-key" anymore and no one will read this anyway but to preamble I agree with all the points in this post but I also feel like the underlying unasked question in this post is "why aren't we using nuclear energy" and. It's a good question. But I don't like the reply that just seems to be "because capitalism and no other reason."

Because, honestly, nuclear is maybe our best nonrenewable option. But there are a lot of cons to that option that have already been Explored and no I'm not talking about "but what if it goes boom?!?!?!"

Nuclear energy facilities take a lot of money to build. Specifically a lot of tax dollars. "I'd rather my tax dollars go toward nuclear energy than fossil fuels" yes I'm with you. But consider just how much nuclear energy it would take to power modern grid systems and suddenly we're looking at a lot of facilities and a lot of tax dollars.

But okay, budgets are reallocated and we start building nuclear power facilities. Yay! We are providing as many construction jobs for blue collar and white collar civil engineering as coal plants! Yay!

The lifespan of a nuclear power plant is roughly 30 years. 20-40 specifically. This is a greater lifespan of a coal mine (30 avg. maximum) and shorter than a coal power plant (avg. 50), for comparison. So now we have to get into decommission and reclamation the same way we do in mining. Once the site is decommissioned, everyone packs up and moves onto some other area, or rebuilds something somewhere else, right?

Well... sure. But it's a bit more complicated with uranium than it is with tailings. See, mine tailings (the byproduct/waste of mineral processing) can almost always go through their own environmental rehabilitation process. Sulfur oxidizes, lead and arsenic leach over time into water in non-toxic amounts... it's all just of the earth after all, and to the earth it all returns. A mine, over time, can be reclaimed by the land surrounding it.

Uranium cannot, at least not over a reasonable amount of time. Look at the Marshall Islands, Yucca Mountain, and the uranium mine tailings issues studied in Kazakhstan. Even small amounts of radioactive leaching has turned these places to ecological no-go zones, especially the Marshall Islands where radiation has been leaching into the ocean since the waste facility's inception. It's no Chernobyl, but it's still bad news bears.

"But 1 cylinder of uranium produces as much electricity as 1 ton of coal!" True!! Coal plants also burn ~9000 tonnes of coal per day. So say we replaced all fossil fuel energy with nuclear energy with a thanos-snap today. We would have to use 9000 uranium cylinders per day. Where do we then store the depleted, but still harmfully radioactive, uranium? Our track record isn't great. There isn't a good answer and there isn't a good option. It will bring the same tragic ecological disasters as coal does, the only difference is that we won't see it, because some poor exploited nation's shores will be the ones to suffer and not our ozone layer.

"Nuclear energy is safer for workers!" Is it? If nuclear energy produced as much capital gain as fossil fuel industries, would that not make the industry more dangerous due to worker exploitation? Statistics never tell the full story.

I've gotten to know miners. Coal and copper and gold, specifically. And those who work oil fields and pipelines, boiler builders and surveyors. From one province to another, death rates are vastly different. Drive 10 hours east and work there and suddenly your life expectancy is cut in half.

And I guess my TL;DR is that energy will always cost us, because that is the nature of things. What and how much it costs isn't determined by the industry, it's determined by those who control it. The nuclear energy fear-mongering is stupid, but so is believing it costs us less than fossil fuels and the belief that there is an objective "less" to begin with.

And we should not lose sight of renewable energy. RENEWABLE ENERGY. Of which nuclear energy is NOT.

pre-kiss story: one of the campers in nick’s group had asked him if he was dating you. his eyes immediately widened and asked the kid who they had heard it from. the camper shrugged in response and repeated the question. nick sighed and said yes, and then his whole group started chiming in. they didn’t believe him, since they’d never seen you two hug or kiss each other. it was true you hadn’t kissed before, since you guys had just gotten together yesterday. the kids demanded proof, practically pushing him over to you. he pleaded and begged for mercy, but to no avail. they’d successfully shoved him to you and weren’t leaving until they saw the kiss. nick tapped on your shoulder and you turned to him. upon seeing his campers behind him, you asked what the occasion was. he whispered what was going on in your ear and you smiled. and that’s when it happened.

okay let me start by saying he got suuuper shy when telling you what the kids wanted

pre-kiss story: you and emma had been dating a little before applying to be camp counselors at hackett’s quarry. you both expressed how you weren’t ready for your first kiss yet, and patiently waited until the right moment. during the summer, you were ready to kiss emma, but didn’t want to tell her in case she still wasn’t ready. unsurprisingly, nobody noticed you two were dating. you guys weren’t as touchy with each other like most couples would be, but it’s just because all the affection is in private. at the end of summer, when everyone was playing truth or dare, neither of you participated in any kissing dares out of respect for the other. after the game, you two decided to go swimming near the dock. you guys played in the water, splashing each other occasionally. but then you had a deep conversation and emma got lost in your eyes. and that’s when it happened.

the kiss was long, not that you cared

pre-kiss story: he was crushing on you for the entirety of summer, and it was very very obvious. you caught on, but didn’t want to risk being rejected in case he didn’t have any feelings for you and only admired you as a friend. your friendship was chaotic and nick teased him endlessly about you. whenever you came around, nick would make kissing sounds, much to jacob’s embarrassment. he invited you to take a walk with him around the camp and you accepted. while walking, you’d talked about a lot of things. you didn’t expect him to be so sweet. he asked what your life goals were, what you were truly interested in, stuff he hadn’t asked you when he was previously getting to know you. you happily answered, asking some questions of your own. you two fell silent after a bit before jacob asked if you were ready for a relationship. and that’s when it happened.

he pulled you closer to him (if that’s even possible) and held you in the gentlest way

pre-kiss story: you two were the quiet counselors, compared to everyone else, that is. you guys kept to yourselves, not very interested in social interaction. until you mentioned you had interest in the paranormal. ryan was briefly shocked, as he didn’t expect someone to match his interests. this drew him to you. you guys became quick friends and he developed a crush on you, and vice versa. each day he’d walk over and sit next to you, offering one of his earbuds and you accepted every time, like today. the same voices filling your ear everyday were getting annoying, but if it made ryan happy, you’d tough it out. he gave a deep sigh, and you turned to him, asking if he was okay. he let it all out, telling you that he had a giant crush on you. he told you he didn’t expect you to reciprocate his feelings. you put your hand on his, and that’s when it happened.

if you hadn’t initiated it, it probably wouldn’t have happened (not because he didn’t want it to happen, but because he would’ve been too shy)

the kiss was slow + affectionate (you had to change positions to make it more comfortable)

when you pull away, he looks at you for a couple seconds, looks down and smiles to himself

he doesn’t know what to do or say after

his heart is like racing

waits a bit before asking if you would like to be his s/o

would love to be all touchy but he’s too shy to ask/initiate it so he’s down for just spending time with you

pre-kiss story: you two were not supposed to here. you somehow convinced nick to give you the keys to the kitchen at 4 am. dylan kept telling you that the fear of getting caught was part of the fun. you guys decided to bake a cake. he had invited you to come with him to do something with him so he could cherish the memory, as you two had just started dating. you had to contain your laughter or else you’d somehow wake the whole camp. needless to say, you guys made a huge mess. flour was everywhere, the cleaning that lied ahead was going to suck. dylan told you not to worry about it, and to enjoy the moment. you sighed and shook your head at his care-free nature. after the cake was done, you’d decided there needed to be frosting too. when you decide to open a container of frosting and put it on the cake, dylan scoops a little bit of frosting on his finger and rubs it on his lips. he comes up with a great idea in which he grabs your attention, daring you to kiss it off. and that’s when it happened.

he did not expect you to actually do it, but he isn’t opposed

the kiss was playful + quick, not much to it

when you pulled away, he had a dorky grin on his face

he’s definitely gonna cherish this for sure

although it wasn’t an extravagant first kiss, he was so so happy

hugs you immediately after (he is extremely in love)

teases you about it even though he’s the one smiling like an idiot

like asking you to feed him the cake (which you do, and he compliments your baking skills)

kaitlyn k.    (the leader!)

pre-kiss story: you had the most obvious crush on kaitlyn, it was so obvious that she knew before anyone else did. she also had a crush on you, just not nearly as obvious. you weren’t embarrassed, though. you went out of your way to compliment her and impress her, to which she’d give a sarcastic response. her words didn’t match her feelings at all, as she was very happy about it. recalling the times you showed off for her and only her, the times you complimented her smile, the times you’d say the most corny pick-up lines, only for her. this time, you took her to the shooting range, telling her if you hit the target with the shotgun, she’d have to give you a kiss. she was shocked at the proposal, but agreed nonetheless. you took your shot but missed. she gave another sarcastic remark, but upon seeing your genuinely upset face, she took matters into her own hands. and that’s when it happened.

you didn’t have to initiate this one!

she would probably say “there, you happy?” after 

knowing good and well she was happy too

tries so hard not to smile but fails badly

the kiss was quick, but nice!!

she watches your face light up and her heart skips a beat

pretends she was only doing it for you even though she’s literally in love

at this point you know she feels the same way

pre-kiss story: you and max were a fresh couple, and a couple days in you had let max rant to you, but you didn’t know he had so many insecurities. you were glad he wanted to confide in you, but you did not expect this. he hated how dependent and helpless he was. he felt like a burden to people, especially you. he despised how awkward he could be. he thought you wouldn’t like someone like him, and how you should try and find someone better. he kept rambling on and on and you couldn’t believe your ears. yes, he was awkward at times but you loved it. everything he hated himself for, you loved. no matter what, you loved every flaw of him, because that’s what made him max. you stared at him in disbelief as he listed things he hated about himself. you had no idea where this was coming from, he probably bottled all of it up. you spoke his name softly, he kept talking. you spoke it a little louder, he still kept ranting. you gave up on words, and tried something different. and that’s when it happened.

the kiss wasn’t long or short, kinda in the middle and it was very gentle

if you say you love him right after he pulls you into a tight embrace

cuddle with him, stroke his hair, and tell him how great he is and he’ll literally plan your wedding

pre-kiss story: you had scraped your arm after a hard fall and had to go see laura in the nurse’s office again. upon seeing your arrival, she gave a faux groan of annoyance. you laughed at her reaction. you guys have been trying to get a kiss in all summer, being a new couple and all. every time you tried, though, you’d get interrupted by injured campers, or just troublesome campers. sometimes both. you’d get a good laugh out of it, but it really sucked. you wondered if laura was as bothered by this as you were, because you really wanted to kiss her. she teased you about your injury while tending to it with care. once she was finished patching you up, she packed up all the first aid supplies and starting speaking in a low, flirty tone. no one else was around so you could finally have your kiss, or so you thought. when she was inches away from your face, dylan barged in, playfully demanding a band-aid. she opened the first aid kit, grabbed a band-aid, and threw it towards him. she told him to get out, as you two were having a moment. dylan scurries out the door, and she turns to you. and that’s when it happened.

the kiss is long (and overdue)

the kiss was a little rough and impatient

when she pulls away she exclaims, “finally!”

she’s so happy and explains to you how she’s been wanting that to happen for so long

you guys might even kiss again from how happy you are

she has a lollipop jar and lets you pick one

she wants you to stay but as another injured camper comes in, you have to leave

she does not hesitate to tell anyone else to buzz off when she wants a kiss from you anymore

you definitely make up excuses to visit her in the nurse’s office for more kisses
